Action, Elation & Dejection

The past 10 days or so has kept me occupied at a range of sporting events across the north west. It’s that time of year when the thermals are first on the list, even ahead of cameras…if you forget your cameras, at least you’ll stay warm!! With the forecast of a cold snap making all the headlines, the last thing I wanted to hear was that I was due to go to Wolves’ Molineux Stadium and Stoke’s Britannia Stadium, amongst others…arguably two of the coldest grounds in the league…gaps in the corners between the stands allow the wind to howl through with a bitterness somehow concentrated primarily on the sidelines. I’m yet to visit Boundary Park, home of Oldham Athletic, which I’ve been told is probably the coldest of the lot…however, I’ve got that to come in a week’s time. I can hardly wait.

I’ve now purchased a 2nd Canon EOS 1DX body, so I’m able to use one on my long lens as well as for the goalmouth, the latter arguably being the more important. This is because the strength of the floodlights at most grounds tends to drop off at the ends of the pitch, where the decisive action often occurs, so there’s no longer such a concern over the quality of the lights, when the camera I’m using can produce more-than-acceptable images beyond 4000 ISO, something I wouldn’t even have considered on my previous bodies. The colours and contrast that come out of it under the dullest of lights is incredible, and has given me the confidence to shoot what I want, when I want, without having to worry about the light we have to work with.

Below are a selection of pictures from the coldest week of the year so far, starting with Dean Saunders’ opening match as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, my first with my new camera…
