A500 To Anfield

This weekend’s football came courtesy of Stoke City against Aston Villa on Saturday, followed by Liverpool’s home tie against West Ham United on Sunday.

The match between Stoke and Villa had the potential to be a feisty, gritty affair, with both teams battling for safety in the Premier League. Unfortunately, it was anything but. Both sides produced a display worthy of relegation, and the number of pictures reflected the poor quality and lack of determination showed by both teams. I even managed to get completely blocked from the one talking point of the match, a stunning 30yd volley from Villa’s Matthew Lowton for their 2nd goal. Alas, the sun was out, and all I could do was try my hardest to make the best of a bad situation…

The next day I travelled to Merseyside in the hope of seeing some sport that would merit some form of photography. The previous day’s visit to the Britannia Stadium had drained me of motivation…only the warm, sunny weather had prevented me from writing it off altogether.

The game between Liverpool and West Ham was booked in the early 1.30pm slot, and with a light covering of cloud overhead, conditions were perfect; sun wasn’t able to interfere with proceedings. It was nearing the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, so as a consequence, fans of both sides dug deep to find another 10% as ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was played out on the tannoy prior to kick-off.

The match itself finished 0-0, and although this may sound like the second shocker in consecutive days, picture-wise I found it was far from it. I covered Liverpool’s attack both halves…they piled on the pressure, bombarding the visitors’ goal with numerous efforts, but all of which they failed to convert…
