In-gerlernd, In-gerlernd, In-gerlernd!

After the chaos of the Royal Shrovetide Football in Ashbourne, my cameras and lenses had taken a bit of a beating. My 14mm lens, in particular, looked in a sorry state. It had been dropped not once, but twice…firstly on the tarmac surface of the main car park where the event began, and later into a muddy mess after took a tumble down a slope whilst trying to get ahead of the play. Suffice to say, it had seen better days. So, with my gear in need of some TLC, where better to go than to cover an England game at Wembley.

I travelled down with a friend of mine, Carl, arriving at the stadium at about 4pm. We couldn’t have asked for better weather…blue skies overhead for as far as the eye could see. It was tempting to leave the waterproofs behind in the car. From experience though, I felt that wouldn’t be a good idea…you never know how things can change in the UK.

The game was a friendly international against Denmark; a game which enabled manager Roy Hodgson to experiment with a range of players, all of whom are looking to impress in the lead-up to the summer’s World Cup. Working for Offside, there were two of us covering the game – myself, and Marc Atkins. A straightforward brief suggested we cover England attack both halves, preferably either side of the goal, so as to provide as much coverage as possible. England limped to a 1-0 victory, with Daniel Sturridge scoring late in the day…
