Hillsborough: 25 Years On

I was 5 1/2 years old when the tragedy at Hillsborough unfolded. I hadn’t even been to see my first football match, this was still to come…Ipswich Town vs. Cambridge United, I believe. Having been to hundreds and hundreds of matches since, both as a fan and as a photographer, I still find it hard to imagine what it must have been like to be there that day, to witness what everyone there saw, let alone to be caught in the middle of the horrific chaos itself.

As many people know, 96 people lost their lives that day, having travelled to see Liverpool take on Nottingham Forest in Sheffield on April 15th 1989.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the disaster. Every football club around the country held a minute’s silence in memory of the victims. Anfield was an extremely emotional place to be, on a day where the home side were taking on Manchester City, in a game that had developed into a title-decider…
