Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Far too often we see sportsmen or women responding to a set of predictable questions fired at them by journalists too scared to delve deeper for something different or unique. In fairness, the restraint shown by so many writers often stems from the fear of rejection from the club or association by which their interviewee is employed. This tends to be a British trait though…I’ve witnessed many interviews involving famous European faces, conducted by foreign correspondents, which have been full of animation and without much concern at all for what is asked or what is said.

Burton Albion’s new manager, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, was no different. Despite seeing himself very much as an Englishman, the man from Holland appeared relaxed but increasingly enthusiastic too as he spoke to a pair of journalists from his homeland. I journeyed along the A50 to meet the former Chelsea star, unveiled just a couple of weeks ago at the Pirelli Stadium. We didn’t have time to do the set up shots I had planned, but I managed to capture some candid portraits of him during his interview with a Dutch magazine…
