Joel Matip

A recent editorial commission from Sport Bild magazine in Germany led me to the impressive Titanic Hotel found on Stanley Dock, about 2 miles from Liverpool’s city center. Arriving to set up at 10:30, our midday appointment turned into a 13:00 appointment, which, in turn, became a 15:00 appointment – I didn’t take a picture until almost 16:00, having been there by this time a good 5 hours. It was hard to be angry though – the hotel staff were extremely accommodating, setting aside the VIP room for us to use as we wished, and when he arrived, Liverpool’s German-Cameroonian defender Joel Matip was one of the most down-to-Earth footballers you could wish to photograph, and a pleasure to spend time with.

The magazine’s journalist, Michael Reis, had plenty of questions and Joel had plenty to talk about. I shot a few candid pictures throughout the interview, before moving to a few posed portraits before he made his way home…

The pictures are available exclusively in the UK through Offside Sports Photography and in Germany through Witters.

This is exactly why you need to keep an emergency muffin stashed away in your bag, Simon. Yes, there will inevitably be crumb ‘issues’ to deal with at some point but you’re a pro and you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

I’m full of useful tips like this so don’t be afarid to ask. I’m here when you need me.
